Last September 16, BLK 2 Distribution released on Youtube the commemorative trailer of the beloved Wong Kar Wai film In the Mood for Love 4k version to honor the film’s 20th Anniversary.
He remembers those vanished years. As though looking through a dusty window pane, the past is something he could see, but not touch. And everything he sees is blurred and indistinct.
In the Mood for Love (200)
Set in 1962 Hong Kong, the classic romance film tells the story of two neighbors, a man and a woman, who form a strong platonic bond after finding out that their respective spouses are having an affair with each other. Aside from being its director, the highly-acclaimed master director Wong Kar Wai was also the writer and producer of In the Mood for Love.
Starring Tong Leung Chiu Wai and Maggie Cheung Man Yuk, the film initially premiered at the prestigious 2000 Cannes Film Festival, where it bagged the Best Actor Award for Tony Leung and the Technical Grand Prize. It also screened and competed at various international film festivals such as Toronto and Golden Horse Film Festivals, and scooped more than 45 awards and 50 nominations.
The 4k restoration of the film made from the original negative was led by Criterion Collection and L’Immagine Ritrovata under the supervision of Wong Kar-wai. They spent five years on the restoration of the film, along with other Wong Kar Wai films like Chungking Express, Fallen Angels, Happy Together, and 2046 (in collaboration with the Sonny Pictures Classics).

The Hongkong filmmaker said his entire filmography is expected to be re-released in December 2020 in a sumptuous 4K restoration. “The World of Wong Kar Wai,” a touring retrospective, which includes brand-new restorations of seven Wong Kar Wai films, is set to debut on December 4 at Film at Lincoln Center in New York. The release was originally meant to happen this Summer 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team behind the retrospective event decided to postpone it and schedule a new premiere date.
