The International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) is now looking for applicants ages 30 years and younger for its annual Young Film Critics programme, taking place from Jan. 27 to Feb. 7, 2021.

The Netherlands-based film festival offers five to eight journalists worldwide a chance to cover prestigious international film festivals and meet with experienced film critics from different backgrounds.

In the past editions, the Rotterdam film festival has welcomed trainee film critics from:

Argentina, Australia, Austria, Benin, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Croatia, Denmark, Finland,France, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Italy, Lithuania, Norway, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovak Republic, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Turkey, Uganda, UK, Uruguay and USA

The training program provides a platform for aspiring critics to sharpen their journalistic knowledge and explore different independent and experimental cinema landscapes. Once a trainee, you will be part of the festival’s editorial team and be tasked to publish blogs and articles on IFFR’s website.

The film festival committee announced last Sept. 18 that the training program would be entirely and exclusively online. It is to adapt to the changing media landscape for independent cinemas worldwide caused by the pandemic.

Applicants must be fluent in writing and speaking the English language and should not be an established critic. They should also be affiliated with print and/or online media outlets to publish reports on IFFR 2021.

To apply, kindly submit the following requirements in one combined PDF file to [email protected]

  • Motivational letter
  • Current Curriculum Vitae
  • The name and details of an affiliate for which you will cover IFFR 2021
  • Recommendation letter from an editor(-in-chief) of that affiliate
  • Three pieces (written, audio or video) of your recent work

If you think you possess all the qualities needed to be a professional film critic, what are you waiting for? Apply now! The application deadline is on Oct. 28, Wednesday
